During this period 5418 machines have been built. The helicopter is characterized with optimal flight performance and great usability for a wide set of civilian missions. The MI-2 has a semimonocoque all-metal fuselage which consists of three sections: the nose section with the crew cockpit; the central section with passenger cabin; and tail section with tail boom and all-flying tail plane.
The MI-2 is powered by two 400 h.p. turboshaft engines and has a standard configuration with a 3 blades main rotor a two blades tail rotor. The engineering solutions, applied in the MI-2, provide it with high maintainability and safety. The MI-2 is capable of sustaining flight and landing safely with only one engine operating.
The main fuel tank capacity is 600 liters. It is provided the addition of two long-range fuel tanks with 300 liters total capacity (included into the useful load). The aircrew is of one member. The landing gear is of fixed-type. Hydraulic system facilitates the flight handling and enhances stability. Avionics enables the helicopter to operate successfully in day/night and adverse weather conditions.

One of the most important features of the MI-26 is high technical customizability. If the necessary parts and components are available, the customization may be performed in the field environment.
Passenger transport version has seating arrangements for 8 passengers in the comfortable soundproof cabin. Cargo transport version is capable of carrying 700 kg of cargo inside fuselage and 800kg on external sling.
Rescue version is able to operate hovering both over the water and the ground and equipped with the arm winch of 120 kg capacity.
Agricultural version is proved to be good providing high productivity and low costs of farming.
